Leah Sorensen-Hayes is a native Nebraskan and the studio assistant to studio quilter, Michael James, at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1993 Leah earned her BFA in ceramics at the University of Nebraska. As the quilting craze gained momentum in Nebraska in the mid-90s, she grew increasingly intrigued by quiltmaking and the art quilt movement, and eventually traded clay dust and kiln casualties for the comparative ease of cotton fabric. She was inspired to return to school with the arrival of Michael James in the Textiles, Clothing, and Design department and earned her MA in textile design in 2002. She has assisted in the textile printing lab at the university since 2010, which motivated her to start dabbling in digital fabric design.
